A one-dimensional model has been developed reproducing the basic thermodynamic and biogeochemical processes in lakes. Inter alia, the model simulates the fluxes of greenhouse gases - methane and carbon dioxide - into the atmosphere. Within the framework of the model, a parameterization of internal gravitational oscillations in lakes — seiches — was proposed. The model was tested using observational data on lakes in Finland, Germany, Russia, USA, Japan. The computationally efficient modification of the lake model is included in the INMCM Earth System model - the only model of Russia participating in the international CMIP experiments, which are used to prepare IPCC reports on climate change. A software package has been developed automatically creating a map of areas and depths of water bodies at a grid of the Earth System model. The simple parameterization of thermal conductivity used in the lake model with large time steps (~ 1 h) allows to fairly reproduce surface temperature of largest lakes on Earth.
